This famous landmark was washed up near Alfriston several centuries ago. For over a century, it has resided on the corner of Star Lane and the High Street.
However, towards the end of October, 2002, it was removed in order to be restored, since hundreds years of wear and tear had rendered it damaged, rotten and discoloured in several places.
Over the last 15 months, Alfriston’s Rector, Rev. Frank Fox-Wilson has worked hard on its restoration, in order to provide the outstanding result that was witnessed at its unveiling on the 7th February, by Lord and Lady Healey.
The figurehead now stands slightly further down the High Street, near the front entrance to the Star Inn, in order to protect it from traffic, which passed very close to it when it was in its original position.
A concise report on the restoration of the lion by Rev. Fox-Wilson is available from the Star Inn, at a price of £2.50. All profits will be donated to St. Andrew’s Church.
Once again, a huge thank-you to Frank for his exceptional work on the figurehead, and everyone else involved in its restoration.
