We aim to stimulate public interest and action in the preservation and promotion of the amenities and character of the district, and to further the welfare of the residents. We also organise various social events, including parties, outings and talks. Our main political activities are making approaches to local and sometimes national government and other bodies. We do not follow any political party line. Please also make representations yourself but let us know what you think - annual subscription is £2.50 per household.
An elected committee of ten members meets monthly to discuss current issues and plan our programme of activities. The Honorary Secretary is Mr. John Hurwood.
Current membership is about 167 households drawn from the village and the surrounding area .
We send a representative to attend the monthly Parish Council meeting and we raise various matters with Local Councils including a successful objection to a proposal to build houses on the Wingrove Car Park. We urged the Parish Council and the War Memorial Hall Committee to improve access to the Hall and to apply for a Wealden Capital Grant to contribute one-third (We contributed £500 and larger contributions were made by the Hall Committee and the Parish Council.) We are concerned about the sale of White Lodge Hotel to a large developer and the possibility of building houses on the land. We organised an appeal from individuals to enable the local surgery to have its own ECG machine thus avoiding trips to Eastbourne Hospital; we also organise a hospital car service but need more volunteer drivers for it. We provide monthly items detailing our activities in Cuckmere News and compile local bus timetables. We usually organise Carols at Christmas in aid of a local charity.
Outside the village, we have been involved in supporting, and commenting on the proposal for the National Park; successfully objecting to a raised waste tip proposed at Selmeston and to phone masts at the Galleon, Lullington & the telephone exchange, objections to excessive housing numbers in various Regional Planning Guidance documents and in the Wealden Housing Plan; urging the Highways Agency, GOSE and ESCC for the A27 to be upgraded and expressing our grave concerns about the plans for the Cuckmere Estuary. We need to have good evidence that any plans do not increase the flood risk upstream.
We have held well-attended talks at our AGM on some of these matters.
We support and are affiliated to the Federation of Sussex Amenity Societies, study their regular Newsletters and send representatives to their meeting when they seem to be relevant to this district.
Our Annual Reports summarise our activities during each year.
Our subcription is £10 for five years or £2.50 annually.
