On Friday 2nd September,  Clare  Balding took time out from covering the Rio Olympics to make her next Ramblers programme. Having learnt about the Alphabets project, established by June Goodfield she asked her to join her on a Downs walk.  The project celebrates our newest National Park by reprinting Eleanor Farjeon’s, A Sussex Alphabet, alongside a new South Downs Alphabet - poems written by children and students of the Third Age.  Peter Bridgewater’s, Snake River Press will publish them in a box set edition, along with the poem All the Way to Alfriston....

During the winter months we will be offering members, their families and friends a number of small social activities such as wine tastings, quizzes or films.

Hopefully this will keep us all in contact, give us an opportunity to get to know each other better and share ideas for future events. Any ideas and offers to hold a small get together would be great! Also you will be welcome to meet us if you are considering membership. (Phone 01323 890373 for information)

We would like to thank everyone so much for their participation and contribution to the Skills Café in Alfriston.

The Event was organised and funded by the Cuckmere Valley Transition Group. The idea of the event was to offer the community an experience where people could come together and offer views and exchange crafts and skills.

Admission to the event was free, as was the table space for the exhibitors. The organisations had booked the Alfriston War Memorial Hall and the Old Chapel Centre, and later the rector of St Andrews Church kindly offered the church space to host further exh...

“La Mayonnaise Prend” French Twinning Group News

Clearly, the weather gods smiled kindly on our hugely successful Twinning Weekend in early October.  The Cuckmere sparkled in perfect autumn weather and our countryside looked at its best.

On Friday morning, the first contingent of a thirty- five strong group of French families and friends  arrived at Newhaven and were welcomed with aperitifs chez Babette, before moving on to their host families. Later that afternoon in the Tye Twitten, a plaque commemorating our twinning, which reads

”Commemorating the twinning of Veules-les-Roses, Nor...

15th August 2015 marked the 70th Anniversary of V.J.Day - the day that WWII ended. Within our local branch of the British Legion we have veterans who took part in the conflict in the Far East, in particular one gentleman, Peter Gadston was at the Battle of Kohema.

While the nation marked the anniversary of the end of WWII in a variety of events, our local veterans expressed a wish to commemorate the ‘Conclusion of Conflict’ with a tea party in our home village of Alfriston to acknowledge peace and homecoming for themselves, their families and friends.

As soon as the wish was expres...

Have you seen the new yellow estate agent boards around Seaford and Alfriston advertising Simon Welch estate agent? Perhaps you thought oh no not another estate agent in Seaford, offering the same old thing! To be honest I did too until I had the pleasure of meeting up with Simon to hear about his ideas on how he could support the community.

Entering their offices on Clinton Place in Seaford the warm welcome you receive is different from others estate agents. If you are anything like me I really find an estate agents offices generally not the most welcoming of environments, In the tim...

On Wednesday 18th March over 30 family, friends, colleagues and local residents came together at the The Star Inn, Alfriston to surprise and thank a very special couple, Liz and David Philips.

Long standing resident and chairman of the Alfriston Events Team, Ray Savage, tells us here, why the many committees in the village have felt it necessary to come together to honour Liz and David in this way.

Ray said: “Liz and David came to Alfriston taking over the running of the Post Office and Village Store in 1975 and making this their home. The Village Store is the heart of a village and...

The early morning sun rising over St Andrews Church, Alfriston set the beautiful scene last Thursday for Simon Jenkins from BBC Radio Sussex to report from our beautiful Village - The Eastern Gateway to the South Downs.

Using the power of social media (especially twitter), the Alfriston Events Team were able to invite and welcome Simon to the village to participate in the day four slot of the ‘village people tour’ series aired each morning last week.

Just before 7am the Old Chapel Centre opened its doors with the smell of hot coffee and chocolate biscuits to welcome members of the Ev...

A guest blog 'borrowed', with thanks from www.thebookshoparoundthecorner.co.uk about 'our' Book Shop in Alfriston Village.

Tired of the depressing way Valentine's Day has been corrupted by happy couples*, this year instead of hibernating and avoiding all the hearts, I decided to take control and indulge my own passion: I took a literary road trip.

The bookshop part of my journey was Much Ado Books in Alfriston. From the road there's not much to see, but I knew there was something special about the bookshop the moment I stepped into the entry courtyard and saw bundles of damaged books...

A chilly and cloudy morning was made brighter with a visit for brunch to a wonderful jewel in the village, Chestnuts of Alfriston, a Bed & Breakfast with a fantastic Tearoom.

Chestnuts are situated at the bottom of the High Street virtually opposite the Coach House Galley.

Taken over by Malcolm and Mary two years ago, this little gem of a tearoom continues too serve not only super and friendly customer service to all that enter, but an extremely high standard of beautifully cooked food, a wonderful array of tasty looking baked treats including a selection of gluten free cakes and lig...
